Community guidelines

Effective October 6, 2026

Ajar is for keeping track of what you read and sharing it with the people you choose. These guidelines cover everything other readers can see: reviews and ratings for friends or for everyone, shelf names and descriptions, and profiles.

Review the book

Reviews are about books: the writing, the story, what stayed with you. Criticism is welcome, harsh criticism included. Attacks on an author or on other readers are not.

Mark spoilers

Tick "Contains spoilers" when a review gives away the plot. Its text then stays hidden until a reader chooses to show it, and share images leave it out.

Be honest

Rate and review books you have read or tried. Don't post reviews to lift or sink a book for someone else, repeat the same review, or run more than one account. To keep reviews fair, public reviews open on a book's publication date, need the book on your Reading, Read or Did not finish shelf, and wait 72 hours on a new account, and each account can make a limited number public each day.

Treat people with respect

No threats, harassment or bullying, and nothing that attacks people for their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, age, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation.

Keep Ajar safe

  • No sexual content involving minors. We report it to the authorities.
  • No sexually explicit reviews or images. Discussing mature themes in books is fine.
  • Nothing that promotes violence, self-harm or illegal activity.
  • No one's private information, such as an address or phone number.
  • No pretending to be someone else, and no spam, advertising or links to scams.

Respect creators' rights

Quote briefly when it helps a review; don't post whole chapters, poems or other people's reviews. Use a profile photo you have the right to use.

How we enforce these guidelines

Public text is checked automatically before it is shown, and a review that looks harmful waits for a moderator. Reports from several readers hide a public review until a moderator decides. Depending on what happened, we remove content, keep reviews from being public, or suspend or close the account; serious or repeated breaks lead to closure.

Report and block

Every review, profile and shelf has Report and Block in its menu. Blocking hides each of you from the other completely. Reports go to our moderators, who don't tell the reader who reported them.

Ajar is a reading tracker where you choose who sees each review: everyone, your friends, or only you. Reviews here are the ones their readers made public.
