Terms of service

Effective October 6, 2026

These terms are an agreement between you and Brandon Lobenberg ("we") about Ajar: the iPhone app, the website at ajarreads.com and the service behind them. By using Ajar, you agree to them, to our community guidelines, and to our handling of data as the privacy policy describes.

Who can use Ajar

  • You must be at least 13. Where the law asks for a parent's or guardian's consent for your age, you need it too.
  • Ajar is offered in the United States.
  • One account per person, with true details. Don't pretend to be someone else.

Your account

Keep access to your Apple ID and email account secure: they are how you sign in. You are responsible for what happens on your account. Tell us at [email protected] if you think someone else has used it.

Your content

Your reviews, ratings, shelves, notes and profile are yours. To run Ajar, you give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, copy, show and send your content to the audience you choose for it. For public content, that includes book pages on the web, share images and links, and search engines. The licence ends when you delete the content or your account, apart from copies that others have shared outside Ajar and backups that expire on their own.

You're responsible for what you post. Post only what you have the right to share, and mark reviews that reveal the plot as containing spoilers.

Community guidelines and moderation

Follow the community guidelines. We check public text automatically and act on reports. We may remove content, keep a public review from being shown, or suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or the guidelines. You can report and block any reader from their reviews, profile and shelves.

Book information

Book details and covers come from Open Library, ISBNdb and readers. They can be wrong; report a problem from the book's page. Covers and book descriptions belong to their owners.

Ajar Plus

  • Ajar Plus is an optional subscription, sold through the App Store at the prices the app shows.
  • It renews automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. A free trial becomes a paid subscription unless you cancel during it.
  • Manage or cancel it in your iPhone's Settings under your name, then Subscriptions. Apple handles refunds.
  • Features that are free in Ajar stay free; Plus only adds to them.

Copyright

We respect the rights of authors and other creators. If you believe something on Ajar infringes your copyright, send a notice to [email protected] with the work, where it appears on Ajar, and your contact details. We close the accounts of readers who infringe repeatedly.

Ending your use of Ajar

You can stop using Ajar and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms, or if we stop offering Ajar, in which case we'll give you notice and a way to download your data when we can.

Disclaimers

Ajar is provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent the law allows, we make no warranties, express or implied, including that Ajar will always be available, free of errors, or right about a book.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost data or profits. Our total liability for any claim about Ajar is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and $50.

Governing law

The laws of Nevada govern these terms, without regard to its conflict of law rules, and disputes belong in the state and federal courts located there.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. We'll post the new version here with its date and tell you in the app when a change matters. Using Ajar after a change means you accept it.

If you got Ajar from the App Store

  • These terms are between you and us, not Apple. We, not Apple, are responsible for Ajar and its content.
  • Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for Ajar.
  • If Ajar fails to meet a warranty that applies, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the price you paid for the app, if any. Apple has no other warranty obligation for Ajar.
  • Apple is not responsible for any claims about Ajar, including product liability claims, claims that it fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection or similar laws.
  • If anyone claims Ajar infringes their intellectual property, we, not Apple, are responsible for dealing with it.
  • You confirm that you are not in a country subject to a US government embargo or designated as supporting terrorism, and that you are not on a US government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
  • You must follow the terms of any third party you use with Ajar, such as your mobile carrier.
  • Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
